China is usually seen through the lens of economics, politics and a regimented population. But in Stepping Out, we meet people who have left home and set out on the road to discover their China and themselves. Su Min, who feels she has done her duty as daughter, wife, mother and grandmother and in her 50’s left her abusive husband; Kiwi, a two-year-old whose parents lost their jobs in the pandemic and not owning a house, travel China in their RV as a family; and Alex a graphic designer exploring his country with his retired mother. Through their travels and their lives, we see a different life in China – a freedom to travel, explore, visit amazing places but taking all the benefits of technology to promote themselves and make a living. The film was made in July 2022 by students from CUC Nanjing and is directed by their tutor.
